If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on during an ADHD evaluation, you’re not alone. Many people feel nervous or even intimidated before their first appointment—imagining a high-pressure test or fearing a list of trick questions. In reality, the process is thoughtful, collaborative, and designed to help you understand yourself—not to judge or label you.

At Mind Body Seven, our approach to ADHD testing is rooted in compassion and clarity. Our goal is to create a supportive space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered. From the initial conversation to the final feedback, every step is about building insight so you can move forward with confidence. Let’s walk through what to expect, one step at a time.

Why ADHD Testing Matters

For many, seeking ADHD testing is more than just finding a name for their struggles. It’s about getting real answers, identifying strengths and challenges, and uncovering the best way forward. ADHD symptoms often overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, and even everyday stress, so a careful evaluation is essential to getting the support you need.

Comprehensive testing doesn’t just confirm (or rule out) ADHD. It also considers how other factors could be playing a role. By understanding what’s really going on, your clinician can recommend a personalized plan—whether that means treatment for ADHD, guidance for another condition, or a combination of supports.

Step 1: Clinical Interview and History

The evaluation starts with a genuine conversation. Your clinician will ask about your history, daily life, and the unique challenges you face. There’s no right or wrong answer—just an honest exchange designed to get the full picture of you.

For adults, this includes:

  • Your school and work experiences
  • Any struggles with focus, deadlines, or organization
  • How these patterns have shown up over time (not just recently)
  • What feedback you’ve received from others, including family, teachers, or employers
  • Key moments when you’ve felt misunderstood, overwhelmed, or dismissed

For children, we also involve parents or caregivers, looking at early development, school reports, social relationships, and any behavioral changes. This helps rule out other concerns and ensures we’re not missing an important piece of the puzzle.

Remember: this step isn’t about “getting caught out”—it’s about making sure your evaluation truly reflects your story.

Step 2: Cognitive Testing with Creyos

After the interview, you’ll complete a set of interactive tasks using Creyos, a research-backed digital platform. But don’t worry: it doesn’t feel like a typical exam. Many people liken it to playing a series of simple “brain games” on a tablet or computer.

Creyos assesses key brain functions that are often affected by ADHD:

  • Attention: How well can you focus and ignore distractions?
  • Working Memory: Can you hold and use information needed for tasks?
  • Impulse Control: Are you able to pause before responding or acting?
  • Processing Speed: How quickly do you take in and respond to information?

Results are compared to a large database of people your age. This helps your clinician see if your cognitive patterns are typical—or if ADHD may be affecting how your brain processes information. The data is objective, supportive, and provides a clearer picture than words alone can capture.

Step 3: Behavior Rating Scales and Questionnaires

Next, you (and sometimes family members, teachers, or a partner) complete questionnaire forms to measure how ADHD symptoms show up in everyday life. These aren’t online quizzes; they’re scientifically developed tools designed to assess things like:

  • How often you lose things, forget appointments, or get distracted
  • Patterns of fidgeting, impulsivity, or restlessness
  • Emotional responses, like frustration or mood swings
  • Challenges in relationships, school, or work

For kids, teachers often contribute important observations about focus and behavior in classroom settings. The combination of your self-report and outside perspectives gives a well-rounded, real-world view—so no single voice carries all of the weight.

Step 4: Clinical Interpretation and Diagnosis

This is where the magic happens. Your clinician brings together all the pieces: your personal story, Creyos test results, and the ratings from you and others who know you well. They compare your experiences to criteria in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), considering both classic signs and the ways ADHD can appear differently in adults, women, and high-functioning individuals.

The goal isn’t to “fit you into a box,” but to see whether a diagnosis of ADHD—or something else—best explains your strengths and struggles. Your clinician will also look for overlapping conditions (like anxiety or learning challenges) that might be influencing your symptoms.

Next, you’ll meet for a feedback session. Expect clear explanations in plain language, with time to ask any questions. You’ll leave not only with an answer, but with a compassionate summary of your unique profile and a new sense of direction.

How Creyos Makes ADHD Testing More Accurate

Creyos adds a crucial layer of objectivity to ADHD evaluations. While interviews and questionnaires are helpful, they rely on memory and self-awareness—which can be tricky for anyone, especially if focus and recall are difficult.

With Creyos, you get real-time measurement of your attention, memory, and self-control. This helps your clinician spot patterns you might not recognize yourself, reduces the chance of bias, and ensures the diagnosis is grounded in both your experience and solid data.

Creyos also provides a useful baseline that can be retested later to track progress. If you begin treatment, measurable improvements in your cognitive performance can be a powerful reminder that change is happening—even when it feels gradual day to day.

What Happens After the Test

An ADHD diagnosis is a starting point, not the finish line. Once you receive your results, your Mind Body Seven clinician will help you create a personalized plan for moving forward—one that honors your strengths, addresses your challenges, and fits your real life.

Treatment options may include:

  • Medication management: If appropriate, you’ll work with a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner to find the right medication and dosage.
  • Therapy or skills coaching: Our therapists can guide you in practical strategies for organization, emotional regulation, and relationships, while coaches help you build concrete executive function skills.
  • Lifestyle support: We’ll look at factors like sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness—because small changes here can make a big difference.
  • Ongoing check-ins: ADHD is a lifelong journey, and your plan can evolve over time. Regular follow-ups help adjust strategies and keep you moving forward.

Our team supports you every step of the way—with in-person care at our Brooklyn clinic or convenient telehealth sessions across New York.

Common Questions About ADHD Testing

How long does ADHD testing take?
Most evaluations unfold over a few sessions: an initial interview (about 60–90 minutes), cognitive and questionnaire tasks (which can be completed in shorter segments), and a feedback appointment to review results. The whole process is made as flexible as possible.

Is the process stressful?
It’s common to feel nervous, but most people find the evaluation surprisingly supportive—even interesting. There are no trick questions or wrong answers, and the Creyos “brain games” are designed to be engaging rather than intimidating.

Can I get tested online?
Yes. At Mind Body Seven, we offer secure, supervised ADHD testing and feedback via telehealth, with digital Creyos assessment and virtual meetings. This makes high-quality care accessible whether you’re in NYC or anywhere in New York State.

Does testing work for both adults and children?
Absolutely. We adjust the approach for age and context—incorporating teacher and parent input for children, and focusing on work, relationships, and lifelong patterns for adults.

Is ADHD testing covered by insurance?
It often is, especially when ordered by a licensed clinician. Our team can help you check your benefits and guide you through the coverage process.

Are my results confidential?
Yes—all information shared in your evaluation is protected by medical privacy laws and handled with absolute care and respect.
